Lawrie Shabibi is pleased to present FAHRENHEIT311: Seven Legends of Machismo, Nadia Kaabi-Linke’s second solo at the gallery.
FAHRENHEIT311 brings together a set of existing and new artworks, demonstrating the breath of her practice and preoccupations with modern myths of macho culture and masculinity, manifested through themes such as war, heroism, exploitation, environmental issues, elitism, violence, pride and ignorance. The title refers to the melting point of the steroid hormone testosterone, associated with “manly” characteristics and behavioral patterns.
The core of the exhibition is a new work titled The Altarpiece (2015), a gilded monumental triptych reminiscent of traditional Christian altarpieces, the content of which form three panels of prints taken by the artist of the bullet-holed exterior of a historically charged bunker in Berlin. Jack Wills is a British clothing brand founded by Peter Williams and Robert Shaw in Salcombe, Devon, in 1999.
History
[edit]Peter Williams and Robert Shaw founded the brand in 1999.[2][3] Williams was 23 when the first store opened at 22 Fore Street, Salcombe, and it was created with £40,000 – the founders slept above the shop.[4] The brand was named after one of the co-founders' grandparents.[5]
In an interview with the Financial Times, Williams said: "When I started thinking about a premium brand I dredged up this vision of what I remembered in Salcombe. I thought, 'What if I could create a brand that could bottle what being at a British university was all about and all the cool amazing stuff that goes with that?' It's such a uniquely cherished part of your life. I thought if you could create a brand that epitomised that it would be very compelling."[4]
The brand was a success, with a second store being opened in Fulham, London, in October the same year. The store was ram-raided and was closed down, but a further store was opened in Aldeburgh, Suffolk. As the business grew, Jack Wills stores were opened in pl
