Friday: St. Paul’s Mint Condition has been busy, touring with Prince, appearing as the house band for TV One’s “Way Black When” and issuing its seventh album together in 20 years, the appropriately named “7.” That disc has earned glowing reviews because of the group’s ability to remain contemporary while offering nods to its storied past. Lead singer Stokley Williams, meanwhile, is nominated for two Grammys for “Not My Daddy,” a song he co-wrote and recorded with Kelly Price. Friday: Born in Brooklyn, singer/songwriter Garland Jeffreys attended Syracuse University, where he met a young pre-Velvet Underground Lou Reed. Soon after, Jeffreys began performing in New York folk and rock clubs, eventually playing on John Cale’s first solo album and recording his own records with help from Dr. John and members of the E Street Band.
