  • Way back in 1978, Philadelphia Eagles’ linebacker John Bunting attempted to pivot on the carpet in the New England Patriots’ Sullivan Stadium and ripped up his knee so badly that he had to undergo surgery and a long period of hard rehabilitation.

A year later in the Louisiana Superdome, Bunting’s teammate Bill Bergey did virtually the same thing and had his season end after only two-and-a- fraction games.

Only three days ago Bethlehem linebacker Mike Reichenbach was trying to avoid a chop block and maintain his balance at the same time and broke a bone in his right hand when he jammed it into the turf at West Chester University.

Football is a very physical game, but as proven by those three instances, injuries are not always caused by opponents. Often, they just happen . . . period!

That’s how it was yesterday afternoon for Dexter Manley, the Washington Redskins’ all-everything defensive end.

In trying to make a back side play on the New York Jets’ rookie fullback Roger Vick in the fourth annual controlled scrimmage in Lafayette’s Fisher Field, he suffered a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee and a sprained right ankle when strong safety Alvin Walton apparently was blocked or fell into him.
