    Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was an American author born in 1896 in Minnesota. He is best known for his novel The Great Gatsby, published in 1925. Fitzgerald had a turbulent personal life, struggling with alcoholism and the mental illness of his wife Zelda. He died in 1940 at the age of 44. Though his work had mediocre initial sales, Fitzgerald is now widely considered a legendary figure of the "Lost Generation" and one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century.

His family lived in a building called the San Mateo Flats in a neighborhood that did not have electricity until 1911. Two sisters, ages one and three, had died from influenza shortly before his birth. Probably because of this, his mother became overly protective. Five years later, Fitzgerald’s sister, Annabelle, was born.
